St Peter’s Community Centre, Charles Street 2.00pm - 5.00pm
Storytelling from cultures and traditions from around the world emphasing shared interests and desires of all people to live in peace and harmony. Double-sided masks will show how seemingly different views of someone can be radically changed when you see the other side of them - their culture, their traditions and their lives. All cultures have oral and literary traditions that are
connected whether they originate in Britain, India, China or Africa. Many of the same themes occur in Indian legends and mythology as they do here in Coventry. Families will be invited to take part in craft activities, listen to stories from around the world and recite their own stories and poems with a peace message that our shared interests and similarities are much more powerful than our differences of culture and race. Noise of the Past Free Double Premier of: Unravelling - a film by Kuldip Powar, a new musical score by Nitin Sawhney
Post Colonial War Requiem - a new composition by Francis Silkstone
Coventry Cathedral 7.00pm - 9.30pm
Special opening by Martin Bell OBE, former independent politician and war reporter.
The inauguration of the new cathedral in 1962 with Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem has offered the city a legacy of remembrance, which does not fall prey to militarism or nationalism. Though the piece was consciously inclusive it did not commemorate soldiers from the (now) former colonies, many of who came to work and live in the city during and after the war. Often drummed out of remembrance rituals and stone memorials, ‘Noise of the Past’ brings
ex-colonial soldiers into the light with two new related commissions. Providing a creative engagement triggered by a call-and-response, both the film and the performance take cue from an inter-generational poetic dialogue. In this exchange, one Coventry grandfather, Sawarn Singh, a soldier who fought in Burma, the Middle East and Africa, responds to questions in poetry by his grandson and filmmaker, Kuldip Powar.
For the film, Unravelling, Nitin Sawhney composed new music to the poetry, to which Kuldip Powar responded with a film. The film will take you on a searching evocative journey of public memorials in London and Coventry, the poppy factory and Coventry Cathedral, to reflect on the way that ex-colonial soldiers are remembered or left behind! Little known archival film material has been projected onto well-known local and national monuments.
Post Colonial War Requiem composed by Francis Silkstone, has also been created as a response to the poetic exchange. The live score will use poetry and music to pay tribute to ex-colonial soldiers, offering remembrance without reverence to militarism. Vocalists and musicians will move within the space of the cathedral. Silkstone’s music is written for an ensemble of Western instrumentalists but develops a dialogue between the musical languages of Western and Indian (Hindustani) art music. Noise of the Past presents Unravelling (2008)– a poetic journey of war, memory & lossThe Herbert
An evocative film written and directed by Kuldip Powar, with a haunting original soundtrack by Mercury Music Award nominated Nitin Sawhney (
http://bit.ly/sawhney). Unravelling is inspired by an Urdu poetic dialogue between Kuldip Powar and his grandfather Sawarn Singh - a WWII veteran from Coventry and one time attendant at The Herbert Museum.
Developed from a unique ‘call-and-response’ method, the director wove textured visuals and poetry with Sawhney’s score, to deliver a powerful ‘unravelling’. This film is a searching exploration of remembrance, colonial legacy and belonging in contemporary Britain.
